Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, after Russia, Canada, China, USA and Brazil and is also the smallest continent in the world.  Australia is located in the southern hemisphere and has a land area of about 7.7 million square kilometres.  Australia is comprised of six states; Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and two territories; Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.  The capital of Australia is Canberra. 

Australia has a population of about 21 million people (2008) comprising of people of diverse culture, religion and lifestyle.  Over 40% of Australians are either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas. English is the national language in Australia, however due to the diverse backgrounds of many Australians, there are over 200 different languages spoken in Australia.
